Nairobi Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage – Kenya
On our way back into Nairobi from Lake Navasha we visited the Giraffe Centre (officially the “African Fund For Endangered Wildlife (Kenya) LTD”). The centre was founded in 1979 as a core breeding centre for the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe and since 1983 has also operated as an environmental education centre for Kenyan school children.
Essentially you rock up their feeding platform to get eye level with the giraffes and then feed them pellets, either with your hands or mouth…
The following day we visited the Sheldrick Elephant orphanage in Nairobi (Part of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust ). Here they house orphan elephants that have been found orphaned in the wild from all over Africa, where they hand raise them until they are old enough to be reintroduced into the wild. The morning consisted of watching them be bottle fed and playing with each other. It was pretty cute.
